    key takeaways

    • Clear protein contains more protein and is easier to digest than regular whey protein.
    • Whey protein contains more calories, fat, and carbs, which may be better for building bulkier muscles.
    • Whey protein is high in calcium and potassium.

Whey protein and clear protein are both popular protein powder options, although they offer different benefits. Clear protein has slightly more protein, while whey protein has more calcium and potassium.

Which has more protein and nutrients?

both clear proteins and buttermilk protein The supplement contains whey.

However, traditional whey protein is made from whey concentrate, while clarified protein is made from whey isolate and further processed to remove fat, carbohydrates, and lactose. Heewon L. Gray, PhD, RDNA registered dietitian and associate professor of nutrition and dietetics at the University of South Florida College of Public Health.

In clarifying proteins, fats and carbohydrates are removed. So, clarified butter contains slightly more protein – about 90% compared to whey’s 70 to 80% range.

“Clear protein contains slightly more protein than regular whey, it dissolves easily in water and has a watery consistency,” he said. Allison Miner, EdD, MS, RDNA licensed dietitian and assistant professor in nutrition and food studies at George Mason University College of Public Health.

Minor points out that regular whey protein has slightly more micronutrients, like calcium and potassium, and calories due to the carbohydrate content.

Which one is best for building muscles?

Both types of protein are effective in helping build muscle. Gray said that if bulking muscle or bodybuilding is the goal, traditional whey may be a bit better because it provides more calories, fat and carbohydrates. He said clear protein may be a better option for increasing lean muscle or recovery without a bulky look.

However, Minor said that what is most important is meeting one’s daily protein requirement, not the specific type.

Which one is better for digestion?

Since clarified protein does not contain lactose, fat, or carbohydrates, it is often easy to digest Compared to regular whey protein, especially for those with sensitivity to lactose or dairy.

“Clean protein is easier to digest because it’s more refined and doesn’t contain fat,” Gray said.
“For individuals with lactose intolerance, who may experience discomfort with traditional whey proteins, clarified proteins are recommended because lactose is removed during processing.”

Minor said that both regular whey and clarified whey are considered fast-digesting proteins, but regular whey may take a little longer because it contains smaller amounts of fat and carbohydrates.

How do texture and consistency differ?

Regular whey powder typically has a creamy, milky texture and flavor. Miner said that without the additives, the taste could be a bit chalky.

However, whey is often mixed with additives to improve its taste and shelf life and is sold in flavors such as vanilla and chocolate.

Minor reports that clear protein powders have a more watery consistency and a slightly bitter, acidic taste.E Without additives. They often come in fruit flavors like lemonade or fruit punch.

“A lighter, juice-like consistency is often easier to consume and better tolerated,” he said.

How to choose the right protein powder for you?

Ultimately, clarified and whey proteins provide high-quality, complete protein for those looking to increase their protein intake with powders or drinks.

As long as you don’t suffer from lactose intolerance, both options are solid. The best option for you depends on personal preference.

“Depending on preference, some people may choose traditional whey protein for its richer and more filling texture with balanced macronutrients,” Gray said, “while others may prefer clarified protein for its mild flavor and fruit flavor.”
