The adventure-packed agenda for Saturday at the Meadville YMCA includes not only engaging activities, but also tips for families on how to keep the fun going this summer.
Healthy Kids Day, which runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Downtown YMCA, will feature inflatable ax throwing (inflatable ax with Velcro target), basketball shooting mini games, local vendors and raffle baskets, as well as food and snack options. There will also be a Ninja Warrior competition at the gymnastics facility on Park Avenue.
Alivia Smock, YMCA membership and programs manager, said Healthy Kids Day is the Y’s national initiative to improve the health and well-being of children. It has been held nationally for over 30 years and aims to inspire children and their families to keep their minds and bodies active throughout the summer.
There will also be some personal trainers and nutritionists on site to answer questions so families can create healthy habits together.
“Good nutrition and regular physical activity are essential to helping children stay healthy and form lifelong habits,” Smock said. “Proper nutrition provides energy to their body and mind, aiding learning, energy levels and overall development.
“Exercise improves physical health, boosts self-confidence, reduces stress and encourages social interaction.”
She said that when children are exposed to healthy choices early on, like in their homes, they are more likely to carry those habits into adulthood, leading to better long-term health outcomes.
That’s why this event is for families to enjoy together.
“Family-centered programs play an important role in building strong and connected communities,” Smock said. “They bring families together in a welcoming environment where people can interact and feel a sense of belonging.”
Asking families to implement healthy habits is different from supporting families in building those habits, which is the goal of the event, she said.
It is free to the community, but those interested in the Ninja Warrior competition must register ahead of time at the Meadville YMCA, 356 Chestnut St., to reserve a spot in the competition.
The first 50 children to participate in Healthy Kids Day will receive a YMCA drawstring bag filled with fun take-home items.
