RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – The Rapid City YMCA hosted Healthy Kids Day, offering free activities designed to help kids stay active and build healthy habits for the summer.
The YMCA opens its doors for tours in the late morning and afternoon. Families visited the child monitoring area, wellness center and gym.
YMCA CEO Keyes Larson said the program focuses on giving kids a chance to have fun and be themselves.
“I think what I want them to learn is that it’s so important to be active as kids, eat well and have fun,” Larson said.
The event included a full day of family games and activities, including a Strider bike course, face painting, coloring activities and a 9-Square game with the Rapid City Police Department. In the North Gym, kids tested their skills with punts, passes and kicks with the War Eagles football team.
Larson said the program highlights the importance of forming healthy habits early.
Larson said, “I think this is a great way for the YMCA to create awareness in all communities across the country how important it is for kids to stay healthy and have fun safely, and so it brings awareness that the YMCA is a great place to bring the community together.”
The event was free and open to families.
