Imagine that you just bought the most beautiful piece of land. Everything is lush and green, there are birds chirping, bees buzzing around wildflowers, mature, shady trees, and a tranquil creek that winds its way through the property.
Everything is blissful UNTIL a new neighbor moves into the house down the road and starts dumping all of her trash in the creek!
Conventional Medicine says, “Well, just get a net and fish the trash out when it gets to you. You’ll need one type of net for soda cans, another type for water bottles, and yet another for food waste.
Problem solved!”
But the problem ISN’T solved!
Your neighbor is continuing to pollute your beautiful creek!
Functional Medicine says, “Let’s go together and talk to the neighbor, figure out why she’s doing this, and get her to stop dumping her trash in the creek.”
So, you could say Conventional Medicine works “downstream” by treating individual symptoms and Functional Medicine works “upstream,” correcting the original problem.
There will be no (or a much smaller) need for multiple nets (medications and/or surgery) to remove the trash (symptoms) if the neighbor (root cause) is handled properly!
