And yet, if you are like me then you have been sifting through Clinique face wash reviews trying to figure out if it is really worth it. Because let’s face it, we’ve all used about fifteen gentle cleansers that promised not to strip your face and then left your face completely stripped. Does it deliver? Here’s what you need to know: What’s in it, what those ingredients actually do, and whether the formula lives up to the claims:

Olive oil in face cleanser, WTH? I know, you think of oils as lubricants, but they also remove grease. Olive oil does most of the cleaning here. A 2024 study found that it may actually prevent inflammatory responses. It works by Blocking an enzyme involved in triggering skin inflammation. In plain words: When your skin is red, reactive or simply angry, cucumber extract helps calm it down. For sensitive skin that gets irritated easily, it’s a useful addition to cleansers. There is no catch here either, it is very well tolerated and is not going to bother anyone.

It’s thinner than you might expect, especially compared to other face washes. A more watery gel than a proper gel, it produces a light, soft lather rather than a large foamy cloud. The first time you use it you may actually wonder if it’s doing anything. But I like it because it spreads easily without pulling the skin around, rinses off completely without any residue, and doesn’t leave anything that feels heavy or greasy.

Fragrance

There is no one. Zero. No synthetic fragrances, no essential oils, no masking fragrances. This is a sign of a good product for sensitive skin that gets irritated easily. That’s part of the reason why it’s the extra lightweight version, know what I’m saying?

How to use it

Like all cleansers, it’s the first step in your skin care routine. Wet your face with lukewarm water, apply a small amount between your palms until a lather starts to form, massage it all over your face. Wash and dry thoroughly. You can use it twice a day, in the morning and at night. If you wear significant makeup, you may want to use a different makeup remover first (if you want to stick with Clinique products, I recommend Take the Day Off). It will not cut through the foundation on its own.

A classic green bottle, as you would expect from Clinique. The hole doesn’t drip, doesn’t clog, and dispenses an even amount every time. There is nothing much to say about it. It’s functional, not pretty.

Performance and personal opinion

This cleanser does exactly what it says on the tin and nothing more, which sounds like light praise but it really isn’t. It lathers gently, cleanses thoroughly, and your skin feels comfortable afterward. Use it consistently and your skin will remain calm. No flare-ups, no irritation, no cleanser-makes-worse situations, which anyone with sensitive or dry skin knows well. It is so gentle that it can be used twice a day without leaving stains on your face.

Verdict: Should you buy it?

If you have dry or sensitive skin and you’re struggling to find a cleanser that actually respects your face – yes, buy this. This is not going to surprise you. The texture is simple, the lather is modest, and it won’t change your life. But it really has a well-thought-out formula, it’s completely fragrance-free, it uses a gentle surfactant system, and it contains a serious amount of barrier-supporting and moisturizing ingredients for everything you wash off after a minute. For oily skin, for removing makeup, for someone who wants an active treatment cleanser – look elsewhere. But for dry, sensitive, or reactive skin that just needs to be cleansed without making it worse, it earns every bit of the reputation it’s built over the past few decades.
