where was i this week
This past week has been very busy for me, which is why I’ve been MIA. Not sure if the next several weeks will be much different. My basement will be “finished” in July and possibly August. I wish I had done this 20 years ago when I first moved into a new house, but I didn’t think I needed it, plus I was traveling so much for work that it wouldn’t have worked. So, I’m doing it now in a time of tariffs and inflation. The cost is 4 times higher than 10 years ago. Ugh.
The hardest thing for me right now is clearing out my basement. I inherited everything from my parents, my brother, my grandmother, and even some things from my aunt on my father’s side. I have donated about 800 items to the Buy Nothing group in my city. I’ve also donated a lot of things to local thrift stores that support good causes in the community. I hired a college student who worked junk removal during the summer, and I got rid of about a truckload and a half of boxes for $600. Still, there are still more things I have to go through and get rid of. This is tremendous.
I have a huge, “brand new” but 24 year old (never used) custom-made sofa that I bought for the veranda that I converted into a 3 season room in the house that I inherited from my folks. Shortly thereafter I moved to my current house, so the couch is stored under plastic in the basement. But now I think I can use it on a revived lower level. Therefore, it needs to be moved out of the basement to the attached garage. I’m going to have to hire some people to do that for me.
Last week, my general contractor called one of his teams to locate and fix a leak on the west wall in my family room. Big work. And at the same time another contractor came to install a new garage door opener in a section of my garage door. Although my current opener worked fine, it needed an updated motor in order to install a keypad for the subcontractors working in the basement. I’m literally watching my dollars take off on wings.
Also, my aunt who was often like an older sister to me is at the end of her life, and it is very upsetting. She is in a nursing home and is being given more medication than is understandable, at least to me and some of my cousins. But we are not his children, so it is not our decision. This is a very sad thing.
So forgive me if my blogposts become more sporadic in the coming weeks.
